The Importance of Spiritual Maintenance

Spiritual maintenance is very essential in the life of a believer in Jesus Christ. I’d like to call it: The tune up.  Though there are three components to what makes a person: spirit, soul and body,  the spirit man of the person would require the most fine tuning. Why is this? Well, if our spirits are on one accord with The Holy Spirit, meaning that we are aligned in his will, his Word and are abiding by his truth and statures, we will be able to hear his voice more clearly and do what he has called and assigned us to do. The Holy Spirit is our guide, our source, our foundation, our strength, our everything!  Therefore, if we don’t strive to have our spirit man positioned in him, and instead, choose what is contrary to his Word, we will waiver.  Our soul man will be weakened, our flesh will begin to stink, we will be attracted to those things that are not of Christ, and our heart will not be restored and renewed due to it being filled with worldly things.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 states, “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Notice the order that the Lord has laid out for us: Spirit, Soul, than Body. Immorality is best understood when you understand the “Godhead” of Man (us humans). If we are created in the image of God as stated in Genesis 1:26, then that means we also have 3 components that make us whole.

Furthermore, if our spirit man is not in obedience with the Lord, how can we truly walk with him? If the spirit isn’t in its rightful position, then the soul, the mind, the heart and our flesh will begin to be out of alignment; causing us to stray away from righteousness and holiness. This causes us to be off balance.

The spirit gets deposits of outward and material things through the soul. The spiritual aspects of the ‘Spirit’ are ‘Faith,’ ‘Hope,’ ‘Reverence,’ ‘Prayer’  ‘Honor’ and ‘Worship.’

It is through our spirit that restoration, cleansing, deliverance, healing, newness, transformation, repentance and regeneration take place. When our spirit goes through that process, our soul is fed with the Holy Spirit, our flesh can be crucified, our mind can be renewed, and our heart can become pure in Christ!
